How Long Does It Take for an Adjustment to Hold?

A question I hear all the time is, “How long will my adjustment last?” That’s a great question—and the honest answer is, it depends on your body, your lifestyle, and what’s going on with your spine right now.

When we give a chiropractic adjustment, we’re helping to correct a subluxation—a misalignment in the spine that interferes with how your nervous system works and how your body functions as a whole. The goal isn’t just to move a bone; it’s to help your body restore better communication between the brain and the rest of the body so it can heal and function naturally.

Here’s something important to understand: feeling better and functioning better aren’t the same thing.

Most people start to feel better first. Pain eases up, you move a little more freely, and you notice less tension. That’s a great sign your body is responding!

But functioning better—meaning your spine stays in proper alignment, your muscles and ligaments support that position, and your nervous system is working without interference—takes a little more time. It’s like training your body to hold a new, healthier posture after being stuck in an unhealthy one for a while.

If there’s already some degeneration or arthritis in your spine, that means those spinal joints and discs have been under stress for a long time. In those cases, it may take a bit longer for your adjustments to hold and for your body to fully adapt. Healing is still absolutely possible—it just takes consistency and patience.

Your daily stress and workload also play a big part. Long hours sitting, heavy lifting, lack of rest, or emotional stress can all make it harder for your spine to stay in balance. The more stress your body faces, the more support it may need through regular adjustments and healthy habits.

So remember—your adjustment isn’t just about short-term relief. It’s about helping your body heal, function, and adapt the way it’s designed to. Feeling better is the first step, but functioning better is where lasting health really begins.
